Find the right number first
There’s no national DMV fax number: each state, and often each unit within a state, has its own. In order of reliability, take the number from:
- the letter or form the DMV sent you, if it prints a fax number;
- the page for that process on your state agency’s official website, ending in .gov;
- the agency’s phone line, if you can’t find it in either place.
Lists of “DMV fax numbers” on other websites go out of date. Check any number against the state’s own site before you send personal details to it.
Examples from state agencies
| State | What you can fax | Fax number |
|---|---|---|
| New York | Correspondence for the DMV’s Medical Review Unit | 518-402-2991 |
| Pennsylvania | Medical reports to PennDOT’s Medical Unit, sent by doctors and other licensed practitioners | 717-705-4415 |
| Pennsylvania | Replies to PennDOT insurance letters: a signed letter from the insurer’s headquarters, the front and back of the title or a bill of sale, a salvage certificate, a repossession letter, or an out-of-state registration card or title | 717-772-1550, or email FRInsurance@pa.gov |
| California | Public Records Act requests to the DMV’s Legal Affairs Division | 916-657-6243 |
Some forms carry a number for one case only. When California’s DMV asks your doctor to complete a Driver Medical Evaluation (form DS 326), it fills in the return fax number on the form itself.
What usually can’t be faxed
- California, suspended registration: proof of insurance goes online, by email, at a DMV kiosk, by mail or through the automated phone line, not by fax.
- California, your own driver or vehicle record: request it online, at a kiosk, by phone or by mail. The DMV’s fax number on that page is for Public Records Act requests only.
- New York, insurance letters: only your insurance company can file proof of coverage, and it does so electronically. The DMV says paper proof and emails aren’t accepted, and your agent or broker can’t file it for you.
- Originals: when a form asks for an original signature or an original document, send what the form asks for. A fax is a copy.
How to fax the DMV with FaxTonic
- Confirm the number on your letter or on the agency’s own page for that process.
- Scan the documents, or photograph each page flat and in good light, and include the case, file or license number the agency asked for. FaxTonic takes PDF, JPEG, and PNG files, up to 20 pages per fax.
- Open FaxTonic and add your file. Keep the free cover page: add your name and phone number, and put the agency’s reference number in the subject.
- Choose the United States, enter the fax number and check the total: $1.49 a page, cover page free. Then pay by card.
- Keep your status page: it records when the agency’s fax machine confirmed delivery, which helps if you have to show you met a deadline.
FaxTonic can’t receive faxes, so give the agency a phone number or mailing address for its reply.
